Description
Zephyranthes candida seeds grow into the white zephyr lily or Peruvian swamp lily a bulbous geophyte native to the subtropical biome of eastern South America the La Plata region of Uruguay, Argentina and southern Brazil. Described by Herbert (William Herbert, 17781847, British botanist and monographer of Amaryllidaceae). The epithet candida means ‘gleaming white’, referring to the pure white flowers. One of the most widely cultivated and naturalised Zephyranthes species produces pure white, crocus-like, upright flowers that emerge from the narrow grass-like foliage repeatedly throughout the warm season, with flowering often triggered by rainfall. Naturalised across much of the subtropical world. The genus Zephyranthes derives its name from the Greek zephyros (west wind) + anthos (flower). Family Amaryllidaceae.
Full sun; moist to well-drained soils; warm subtropical to cool temperate; flowers repeatedly through summer. One of the most reliably free-flowering Zephyranthes.
