Description
Telopea speciosissima, commonly known as theNew South Wales waratahor simplywaratah, is a large shrub in the plant familyProteaceae. It isendemictoNew South WalesinAustralia. Nosubspeciesare recognised; the closely relatedTelopea asperawas classified as a separate species in 1995.T.speciosissimais a shrub to 3 or 4m high and 2m wide, with dark green leaves. Its several stems arise from a pronounced woody base known as alignotuber. The species is well renowned for its striking large red springtimeinflorescences (flowerheads), each including hundreds of individualflowers.
