The ‘Malawi Green Mix’ bean, also known as the malachite bean , was introduced to Malawi by German settlers in the 1800s . This heirloom variety grows into a vigorous vine that can reach 6 feet in height, producing 4- to 5-inch pods, ideal for shelling . Its mineral-green beans, reminiscent of malachite, offer a rich, deep flavor , particularly appreciated in soups , stews, and traditional recipes. Farming method

To improve germination, soak the seeds for a maximum of 8 hours in lukewarm water (longer soaking will kill the seeds). Sow directly after the last frost , at a depth of 2.55 cm .
Space the plants 7 to 10 cm apart and the rows 30 cm apart. Germination takes 8 to 10 days between 21 and 31 C (optimum 26 C).
Plant in full sun (level 3), with moderate watering (level 2). Provide a trellis or teepee to support the vine. For continuous production, sow every 3 weeks .

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the pods are brown and completely dry . Allow good air circulation to prevent moisture buildup and ensure optimal drying.
Store only dried beans , in airtight containers away from moisture.
