Dodonaea viscosa ‘Purpurea’ seeds grow into the purple hopbush a colour form of the broadleaf hopbush, a widely distributed shrub native to the subtropical biome of Australia, where the typical green-leaved form grows across arid, semi-arid and coastal zones; the purple-leaved form is a selection that has become one of the most widely planted ornamental shrubs in warm-climate horticulture worldwide. Described by Jacq. (Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin). The species epithet viscosa means ‘sticky’ (from Latin), referring to the resinous, sticky surface of the leaves. ‘Purpurea’ designates the deep reddish-purple to bronze-purple leaf colour. Seeds from this cultivar may NOT breed true seedlings will show variable leaf colour from green through bronze to purple shades. The distinctive winged seed capsules are often flushed pink-red.
