Description

Cassia fistula seeds grow into the golden shower tree one of the most spectacular flowering trees in the world, native to the seasonally dry tropical biome of western and southern India and Sri Lanka. The national tree of Thailand and the state flower of Kerala, India, it produces its breathtaking display of long, pendulous racemes of pure golden-yellow flowers on bare or nearly bare branches in late spring and early summer, before the compound leaves fully emerge creating cascades of gold that drench the entire tree in colour. The cylindrical, dark brown to black pods can reach 60 cm in length and are characteristic. Important in Ayurvedic medicine for millennia. Family Fabaceae.
