Abelmoschus esculentus cv. ‘Clemson Spineless’ seeds grow into the Clemson Spineless okra one of the most popular and widely grown American heirloom okra cultivars, developed at Clemson University (South Carolina, USA) in 1939 and still the standard market variety in North America. Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench is the cultivated okra a multi-use food crop of Old World tropical origin (probable centre of origin: West Africa or Ethiopia), described by Linnaeus as Hibiscus esculentus and transferred to the current genus by Moench. The epithet esculentus means ‘edible’. ‘Clemson Spineless’ is an AAS Award winner (1939); it produces straight, smooth, ridged green pods without the stinging hairs present on many wild and older varieties, maturing at 79 cm for peak tenderness. Used as food (pods, leaves, seeds), animal fodder and medicine. Family Malvaceae.

Full sun; fertile, well-drained soils with consistent moisture; warm tropical to subtropical conditions (minimum 18C for germination). Direct-sow after last frost. Harvest pods at 79 cm for best flavour and texture over-ripe pods become tough and fibrous.
